LLDS for Northcote House
Northcote House re-conceptualises the Victorian terrace typology in response to the existing urban context. The 80-square-metre house utilises advanced robotic technology to create a highly textured interior, playing with light and darkness over a vertical central void. Bespoke interior concrete textures serve acoustic and thermal performance to create comfort.
Jury Citation
Northcote House is a genuinely exciting collision of technology, sculpture and the innovative use and re-use of different materials. The nature of the interior spaces and how they are occupied feels unfamiliar, inspiring some jury members to comment that they look forward to seeing how the house will be used in the future. Every space is unique and the use of concrete is so innovative in how it has been pushed as a material that it almost becomes its own material type. The jury was also impressed by the designers’ use of the point cloud scanning process and how that evolved a new method for working, which involved moving back and forth between the point cloud scan to develop the interior. While Northcote House speaks of technology and innovation, it is important to note that everything was manufactured within a five kilometre radius, bringing a beautiful sense of localness to a highly refined project.
