Richard Coulson is a director of Cox and has experience across a range of public building typologies including culture, sport and transport. As part of the Queensland office for 20 years, and 30 years in the industry, he has been part of many of Cox’s major public projects for Queensland with national roles and international projects including the Singapore Management University, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and the Jakarta Velodrome.

Richard’s skills centre around the development of master planning and conceptual design through to project delivery. The scale of these projects has varied from pavilions and exhibition design through to large public buildings. The works have often had an indigenous basis varied between visual arts, performing arts and cultural heritage.

Richard is passionate about cultural projects working with Indigenous communities across Queensland. He has a long history in sustainable design stretching back to the Energex Headquarters at Newstead – the first commercial building in Queensland to be awarded a 6-star Green Star As-Built status.

Richard has led Cox’s ongoing commitment to the community through his involvement in the completion of three projects for housing young people with disabilities since 2005, as well as benchmark independent living projects which represent leading thinking in the areas of design and policy approach.

Richard is one of a collaborative team of directors specialising in city shaping projects. He has significant experience in urban regeneration projects including Perth City Link, Ipswich City Centre Redevelopment, Trade Coast Australia at Brisbane Airport, Newstead Riverpark in Brisbane, James Cook University Townsville and the Cairns Waterfront.

His most recent public projects include Kangaroo Point and Breakfast Green Bridges, the Cairns Convention Centre Expansion and the Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
