Studio Prineas for Montage Apartment

Embracing the ethos to ‘think more, build less,’ an unremarkable 1990s apartment on Gadigal Land in Sydney’s Double Bay has been converted into a joyful family home that balances luxury and environmental responsibility.
Jury Citation
Montage Apartment is a clear winner in a strong field due to its tightly planned program, modest budget and limited scope, all of which cleverly prioritises maintaining an existing 1990s apartment, whilst ensuring a complete transformation. It is a successful adaptation of an existing floor plan, handled with a light touch to achieve an impressive result that appears completely new and fresh. The jury described Montage Apartment as a quiet project, where delving into its design narrative reveals its many layers. It is to be commended for its strong and nuanced colour palette and detailing, including the curvature of the door frames, island pillar and orange grouting, all of which make the interior design unique. These details soften the small space and draw attention to the scheme’s beautiful texture and materiality. The recycling of the Carrara marble in the bathrooms was celebrated as being significant in terms of the project’s concern for embodied energy.
