Jackson Clements Burrows Architects for Berninneit Cultural and Community Centre

Berninneit, (meaning “gather together”) creates a vibrant new civic place as a focus for arts and culture, with a design response that feels inherently connected to and of its place.
Designed to Passivhaus Standards and incorporating mass-timber construction, Berninneit fosters social and cultural connection through enriching public programs and services.
Jury Citation
Berninneit Cultural and Community Centre is a well-considered and beautiful community space that is light, airy and extremely welcoming. It has an integrated architectural and interior response, which amplifies the sense of connection with the outdoors. The jury applauded its high level commitment to sustainability via a Passive Haus approach and use of mass timber, as well as its integration of First Nations’ design principles. These were brought into the project in subtle ways, without the use of overt figurative motifs, and represent a more understated approach that is particularly important and relevant to current ways of thinking about design.
